Whaddon Way Church has always been active in youth work and is now seeing a second generation coming through as those who were infants when the church was new are having children in turn populating the clubs and the junior church.
WWC believes that its youth work should be done well, and we have supported the professional training at a local university of three people who intend to make a career in youth work. The most recent, Ricky Rew, started his course in September 2006.
WWC also invites the six local schools to presentations of the Christmas Cracked and Easter Cracked entertainments devised by the BridgeBuilder Trust which works in schools to explain Christianity to young people. Last Christmas about 300 10/11 year-olds learnt how to separate the essentials of the nativity from the commercial and traditional "fluff" that has stuck to it, and also made some mince-pies.
We run a Junior Church most Sundays. Usually the first part of the morning service is family-friendly, and may include a children's talk or an item where the children take an active part in an item. Then at about 11:00 the children leave for their lessons in the rooms at the back of the church while the adults listen to the sermon.
The number of classes depends upon the age of the children. At present we have two largish classes roughly split between primary and secondary children, but will run an older class if some of the older teenagers turn up, and a crèche if there are babies.
Mums (or Dads) and babies/toddlers - well attended chance for parents to chat and children to play.
